British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
