The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
