Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
